True living is more than just keeping your heart beating and a roof over your head. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that is “just how life goes.” There’s way more possibilities, and, yes, IT IS WORTH GOING AFTER.

Be daring.

Stop blowing yourself off; we get so upset when others blow off our ideas and desires, but we have no problem doing it to ourselves. Take your ideas, feelings, wants, wishes, yearns & urges seriously–those are your only true guide. Other people have no idea what’s best for you, so stop seeking their validation. Do what you need to do for you.

Be confident.

Stop doing everything by the book. It’s time to start drafting your own revised edition. Rules don’t always exist in the name of the greatest good; more often than not, they exist because someone wants to establish or maintain power. And that’s just not a good enough reason.

Be inquisitive.

Life is a series of choices. You choose every single direction that your life takes. Use it to your advantage.

Be deliberate.

There will be people out there who won’t support what you’re doing. Who cares. Trust yourself more, trust others less. That includes significant others.

Be brave.

Figure out what you value, and make the necessary changes to align your life with those values. If you value time more than money, stop working 60 hour work weeks. The only way you’ll get more time, is by doing less. It’s simple math.

Be introspective.

Speaking of money, IT ISN’T AS IMPORTANT AS WE’RE TAUGHT TO THINK IT IS. Money comes, and money goes, and it provides little value itself until you actually exchange it for something that is valuable to you. So, ask yourself that question. What do you value? That’s where the majority of the money you spend should be going.

Be prudent.

Having good intentions doesn’t yield results. Get off your a$$ and make it happen.

Be zealous.

Life isn’t meant to be taken so seriously. In the scheme of things, if you’re going to be late to work, it doesn’t really matter. If you don’t get an A, it doesn’t really matter. If you’re proven wrong about something, it doesn’t really matter. If your house isn’t as nice as your best friend’s, it doesn’t really matter. Relax, and enjoy the ride. Think big picture, not details. Will this matter in 100 years?

Be panoramic.

The world is not judging you as much as you think they are. Most people are too wrapped up in themselves to even notice what you’re doing. Drop the pride and have a little fun.

Be lighthearted.

Perhaps one of the greatest goals we can seek for ourselves is exhilaration. Are you exhilarated by your life?

Be stimulated.

When making decisions, always ask what’s more important. Thinking about canceling on an invitation to a friend’s baby shower or birthday party because you have too much work to do? Get your head out of your ass. Your friend is more important; work can always be done later. Nothing is that urgent. Relationships, however, are your foundation and you’d be lost without other human connections, so value them. And show it.

Be thoughtful.

You don’t just need to love yourself; you need to respect yourself. You’ll garner that respect by accomplishing things you’ve set out to do.

Be relentless.

Being content with your life and being proud to call it yours are two different things. Strive for the latter.

Be courageous.

Last but not least, wine should be drank with meals. Preferably Argentinian Malbec. It’s freaking delicious.

Be delighted.

Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids. - TED

Grandin recently shared her inspiring story at the 2010 TED Conference. After watching her lecture, I couldn't help but feel Grandin's success was a testament to the educators in her life who recognized we all learn differently - no better or worse - just differently. Because her natural gifts and talents were nurtured rather than ridiculed, this autistic woman, who very well could have been institutionalized as a child, instead is a leading thinker, effecting real change in the world. In my opinion, Grandin's life work offers strong support of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

FSO Grad Wins Big Designing Sleek Online Course

EMDTMS Grad showcases design skills and ability as an educator in Udutu contest.

It’s become instinctual. When you meet someone new, visit a new place or become interested in a new business, your natural inclination is likely to look for more information on the Web. We have come to expect a lot from the Internet, and when the Internet disappoints, it’s like hitting a proverbial brick wall.

Now, imagine you have a disability that restricts your access to that same information. Suddenly, the Web becomes even more disappointing, and even frustrating. Making technology accessible for everyone became a dominant interest for Education Media Design and Technology MS graduate Emily Wray, and her work didn’t just pay off academically (although she was valedictorian of her class).

It also paid off in the form of prizes, including an iPod shuffle, $500 in Udutu services and Udutu gear. Wray built a Technology Accessibility online course using Udutu, an online course authoring tool, and because of a chance email newsletter she got after registering on the site, she decided to enter the "Are You a Udutu Guru?" contest.

“I got pretty excited about it. It’s like one of those contests that you just enter, like putting your business card in a fishbowl and hoping for a free lunch,” Wray said. “I didn’t expect anything to happen, but I was pleasantly surprised.”

Wray’s being modest. Her winning entry, which you can see here, was a sophisticated course that engages the learner through interactive materials with a sleek design that showcases how professional the course really is. She achieved this by really digging into the customization options Udutu provides, specifically choosing colors that weren’t as harsh to the eye as some of the default design selections.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that EMDTMS is strictly for educators looking to learn how to use more advanced technology in their classrooms. While the program is definitely useful in that sense, for someone like Wray, who is a designer by trade, her interest in the program stemmed from a different place.

“I felt like the EMDT program was the natural intersection of what my skills and talents are,” Wray said. “There’s this part of me that’s creative, and that’s the part that’s a designer, but then there’s this other part of me that is also kind of like a coach.”

Wray pointed out that Dr. Ian Gibson sometimes has Roger Mundell, the CEO of Udutu, guest lecture in his EMDTMS course and that the company recognizes Full Sail and is always looking out for student work, so students should keep an eye out for more contests in the future. In addition to finding the right degree program, she also said she had a lot to owe in terms of finding direction to spending time in the workplace between degrees.

“It’s been a very long and winding path to get to where I am,” Wray said. “It wasn’t until I started working that I started intuitively feeling out exactly what I should be doing.”

-Ashley Belanger

Ocoee Middle School is the state technology demonstration school for Florida- showcased every year at FETC. Teachers are transported from the conference to the school to show how technology can greatly impact learning - and Full Sail is (as the principal says), "a BIG part of the change happening in her halls everyday." Her goal is to develop a mini-Full Sail at her school.

A few months ago the EMDT crew met with Sharyn Gabriel (principal) and a few staff to discuss a Flash Mob idea. They were so inspired by the Flash mob scene from the Oprah and Black Eyed Peas show - they wanted to try the same concept - educationally inspired. The band director and reading coach wrote the lyrics related to reading and literacy,- encouraging kids to prepare and read for the FCAT test.

The amazing Full Sail Online Production team made this all happen - they even let the Ocoee Middle School production class shadow them and gave them mini-lessons throughout the shooting process.

The 4-Hour Work Week speaks to that part in all of us that wants more out of life than a stale 9-5 routine for the next 30 years. There are two points highlighted at the beginning of the book that I can't stop musing about:

What would you do if retirement wasn't an option?

Inactivity isn't the goal. Doing what excites you is!

As I make my way through Tim's guide to "lifestyle design," I'll most likely ruminate here... advertising my intentions... throwing it out there... so I can hold myself accountable for the talk I talk...

It's funny how we stumble onto things in life and attach meaning to them, even if they are just random happenings. Kathy didn't send me a link to the 4HWW... It was a totally different book. Yet here I find myself thinking about things - major life things - in a totally new way. Was it chance or something greater?
